*****
Alfie was born on 30th. December 2003. He is
fourth generation Rynchanon breeding, descending as follows:-
Admiral of Nutstown at Nightwing x Ch Rynchanon Cowboys N Kisses
Baronglen The Guardsman
x Rynchanon Delta Lady
–
Rynchanon Ebony & Ivory
x Lady In
Red at Rynchanon –
Ansbury Tomas of Drakesleat
x Bridgedown Avon at Rynchanon
****
Bridgedown Avon at Rynchanon was the foundation bitch
for the Rynchanon affix and lived until she was almost ten years old, when she
succumbed to the dreaded bloat/torsion and had to be put to sleep. She was otherwise fit
and well.
We were prepared for the fact that Alfie’s mum, Zizi,
(Ch.
Rynchanon Cowboys N’ Kisses), might have to have a caesarean, as both her
mother and grandmother had had primary inertia. Although we outcrossed to produce the litter Zizi came
from, in an attempt to breed the problem out, we were still not taking any
chances.
We had warned our vet in good time but when Zizi started
to produce puppies under her own steam, early on the morning of the 30th,
we rang the vet to tell him and he breathed a sigh of relief and went off for
his first day out in three weeks. Big mistake! By midday Zizi had produced five
puppies and then everything ground to a halt. To cut a long story short, our
poor vet was dragged back from his day off and Zizi went into the
surgery. She had four more pups delivered by caesarean.
Although one horn was unaffected, she had primary inertia in the other,
so we hadn’t managed to breed the problem out completely after all.
Sadly we lost one of the bitch pups in the first week
but the other eight, four dogs (two blacks/two brindles) and four bitches (one
red/three brindles), grew on well.
Alfie
& Chelsea - out for a stroll
I chose the red bitch (Chelsea) very early on but Steve, although
he knew he wanted one of the black dogs, just couldn’t decide which one. He
spent hours and hours looking and watching and trying to make his mind up, as
whichever one he wasn’t keeping was already sold and the new owners were
champing at the bit to collect him. It really was an eleventh hour decision in
the end but he obviously got it right because he kept Alfie and made
him up to a Champion.
Apart from being a showman, more importantly he is the love of Steve’s life and an absolute gentleman to live with. He sleeps on the sofa in the living room.
SHOW CAREER SO FAR
Unbeaten at Championship level as a Junior, Alfie gained
his Junior Warrant in 2005, the only Irish Wolfhound that year to get it.
Alfie had an outstanding show year in 2007. In June he had the great honour of winning Best In Show at the Irish Wolfhound Championship Show of Ireland, out of an entry of 86, their highest ever entry. The judge was Robin Searle.
In July, closer to home, he was Best In Show First Day and Reserve Best In Show Overall at the Royal Welsh Show, out of an entry of 856. (The previous year, 2006, he was Best In Show Overall at this show, out of a similar entry.)
He got his first CC at the end of June 2007, at Blackpool Championship Show, under Andrew Brace, (who said in his critique that ‘he should be an easy Champion’), he also got Best of Breed and Hound Group 3 that day; his second CC came at Richmond Ch Show at the beginning of September, under Robin Searle, - (we had a good day that day, as Alfie’s mum Zizi got her third CC and was made up, and we also had Best Puppy In Breed with Ben, ‘Rynchanon Rock Steady For Nightwing’, - oh, and Alfie got Best of Breed and was short listed in the Hound Group); and his third CC, giving him his title, came at Belfast Ch Show at the end of September, under Stuart Milner. He was Best of Breed again and went on to take Hound Group 2.
In June 2008, he won his fourth CC and Best of Breed at Blackpool Championship Show, under judge Ellis Hulme.
He also has 3 Reserve CC's, which he won at Bath in May 2007, Border Union in June 2008 and Border Union in June 2009.

From his Irish shows, he has ten Green Stars, twelve Reserve Green Stars, three CACIB's and one Reserve CACIB
